Πρώτες σκέψεις για μια κοινωνιολογία της μετάφρασης στην Ελλάδα

Abstract

During the last fifteen years or so, a new tendency has been formed within Translation Studies internationally in the direction of the formation of a translation sociology, under the influence mainly of the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu. Unfortunately, this discussion has not yet reached Greece, at least not to the extent that it merits. In the first part of this paper some the- oretical aspects of this discussion are introduced; in the second part some of the work that has been done in the framework of translation sociology is presented; finally, in the third part, some topics will be proposed as pos- sible fields of research and discussion in the Greek context. These include the society’s image of translators, as well as the translators’ self-image under the influence of their habitus; whether translators have a secondary position to the original writers and, if so, what the reverberations to their social status are; whether there is such a thing as a translation field and how it can be delimited. All in all, the claim made is that the promotion of a sociology of translation in the Greek context would be mutually beneficial both for the translation scholars and the translators themselves, as the for- mer will be offered a whole new area of scientific research whereas the lat- ter the possibility to enhance their professional prestige.
