In this note we discuss the role of emotion in motivation to learn. Two theoretical frameworks provide the context of the discussion. Psychoanalytic theory is one of the first traditions that argued for a powerful role of emotions in influencing human motivation and behavior. The motivational systems theory is a more recent formulation in which emotion was recast as a component interacting with personal goals and agency beliefs to form a new definition of motivation. Implications in current educational practice are briefly presented.en
