This thesis offers an introductory study of Κυπριακά .Γράμματα, published in Nicosia between 1934-37, and -1939-56. Κυπριακά Γράμματα was the main venue of expression of the dominant Greek - Cypriot scholars and creative authors of its time. Its varied character and mass of material has dictated a selective approach. Beginning with a general overview of its contents and a preliminary contextualization of the journal's aims vis-a vis the intelectual climate of its time, the main bulk of the study scrutinizes the literary and literary -critical entries to the journal (including some translations), so as to identify its particular physiognomy. (One should not fail to admit that this approach is also suggested by the poor quality of some material, refracting the intellectual poverty of the time). Chapter 1 opens with an account of the intellectual life of Cyprus in the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It subsequently examines the pronouncements of the editorial board, looking for parallel developments in contemporaneus cypriot and helladic journals, publications that also aimed at the preservation of the country's local and cultural heritage. The chapter ends with numerical data on the circulation of Κυπριακά Γράμματα - thus suggesting the outreach of its pronouncement. Chapter 2 discusses the impact of each individual editor (Andonis Indianos, Kostas Proussis, Nikos Kranidiotis) on the formation of the journal's intellectual profile; and the same applies to each of its main contributors. The documentation of this section is drawn from A. Indianos's Archive, which is relevant to the journal's first period of publication and its search for appropriate contributors. The chapter ends with statistical data on the proportions of the literary presence in the journal, vis-a vis work in other genres. Chapter 3 focuses on the literary texts published in Κυπριακά Γράμματα (both Greek originals and translations), and documents the dominant stylistic trends inscribed in them. Concerning the translated material, a more detailed study of T.S. Eliot's and Ezra Pound's translations was judged to be necessary, since these coincide with the first appearance of modernism in the helladic journals of the 1930's. Moreover, the accompanying notes to the translations suggest parallel developments in Greece and Cyprus as regards the theoretical understanding/ reception of modernism and the avant-garde. Chapter 4 deals, with literary criticism, that is: mainly with book reviews, since the critical mass of this material offers plenty of space for quantitative analysis, as well as valid theoretical speculations on the poetics that the journal promoted. The examined book reviews of this section refer to both poetry and prose fiction. (...)en
