Atemplate-based modeling approach for system design: Theory and implementation

Previous research has developed search algorithms for deducing Proper Models (minimum complexity models with physically meaningful parameters) of dynamic systems. It has also been proposed that these Proper Models can be useful for design sensitivity studies. It is argued in this paper that Proper Models could also be used to reduce the design cycle if a computer-based, modeling procedure existed that could automate the generation of these Proper Models. A template-based modeling approach consisting of a two-level representation is proposed. This template-based modeling approach is combined with the existing model deduction algorithms and implemented in a Computer-Aided Model Building Automation System (CAMBAS). An illustrative example is provided to show the potential of CAMBAS for automating the production of proper system models for the design (modeling and simulation) of multi-energy domain systems.
