Το τμήμα Βιολογικών Επιστημών αποτελεί αυτή τη στιγμή το μεγαλύτερο σε ερευνητική θεματολογία, τεχνολογική υποδομή, αριθμό δημοσιεύσεων, αριθμό φοιτητών και προγραμμάτων σπουδών, κέντρο έρευνας στη Βιολογία στην Κύπρο. Κύριοι στόχοι του Τμήματος Βιολογικών Επιστημών είναι: Η ανάπτυξη της έρευνας στους τομείς της ανοσολογίας, της κυτταρικής βιολογίας, της εμβρυολογίας, της βιοπληροφορικής, της γενετικής, της επιγενετικής, της ιολογίας, της νευροβιολογίας, και της καταπολέμησης του καρκίνου, καθώς και στους τομείς της οικολογίας, της μελέτης της βιοποικιλότητας και της αειφορικής διαχείρισης των συνιστωσών της. Η Εκπαίδευση νέων επιστημόνων σε προπτυχιακό και μεταπτυχιακό επίπεδο που να είναι ανταγωνίσιμοι στον ευρωπαϊκό και διεθνή χώρο. Και τέλος η αναβάθμιση υπηρεσιών που σχετίζονται με τις βιολογικές επιστήμες στην κυπριακή κοινωνία.
