Segmental duct ligated pancreas autotransplants in pigs undergo significant inflammation, fibrosis and architectural distortion with decrease in insulin production at one to two wk intervals following transplantation. Daily administration of methylprednisolone sodium succinate prevents the morphologic changes and preserves normal insulin production. It is speculated that steroids exert their beneficial effect by the prevention of fibrosis and by membrane stabilization, preserving cellular integrity which would inhibit autodigestive phenomena, thereby maintaining the normal morphology and function of the graft.en
