dc.description.abstract | The paper by Edwards and Tan compares sliding mode observers (SMOs) to unknown input observers (UIOs) for the purpose of reconstructing faults that affect linear dynamical systems in the presence of disturbances. This comparison reveals some interesting parallels between the two types of observers. In this discussion, we provide an interpretation of UIOs from the point of view of system inversion. We describe various extensions to the UIO theory that are offered by this interpretation, and suggest avenues for future research on SMOs that can make use of similar ideas. | en |
