This essay examines the politics of commemoration with reference to the celebration of the independence of Cyprus. The adventures of this 'historical date' reveal some of the key changes in the political orientations of the two major communities since 1960. This is a commemoration that was forgotten by all for many yearsit was remembered by Greek Cypriots as late as in 1979 when it was first declared a public holidayTurkish Cypriots now scorn this date, even if they are the ones who demonstrated more enthusiasm at the time.
