We consider the finite element approximation of the solution to a singularly perturbed second order differential equation with a constant delay. The boundary value problem can be cast as a singularly perturbed transmission problem, whose solution may be decomposed into a smooth part, a boundary layer part, an interior/interface layer part and a remainder. Upon discussing the regularity of each component, we show that under the assumption of analytic input data, the hp version of the finite element method on an appropriately designed mesh yields robust exponential convergence rates. Numerical results illustrating the theory are also included. © 2013 Institute of Mathematics, NAS of Belarus.

Modelling and Simulation of Bolted Joints under Harmonic Excitation
Oldfield, M.; Ouyang, H.; Mottershead, J. E.; Kyprianou, Andreas (2003)Bolted metal joints under harmonic loading exhibit hysteretic behaviour. This is the major source of damping in frame structures with bolted joints, since the material damping of these structures is very small. In this ...

Stable finite element solutions of fully viscous compressible flows
Barsoum, M. E.; Alexandrou, Andreas N. (1995)This paper presents a stable approach to solve convection-dominated flows in the presence of compressibility effects. This approach employs the Petrov-Galerkin weighing to the FEM equations to achieve stability at the high ...

An hp finite element method for a 4th order singularly perturbed boundary value problem in two dimensions
Constantinou, P.; Xenophontos, Christos A. (2017)We consider a fourth order singularly perturbed boundary value problem posed in a square and the approximation of its solution by the hp version of the finite element method on the so-called Spectral Boundary Layer mesh. ...
