Symmetries corresponding to point transformations of four common classes of one-dimensional non-linear wave equations: utt = [F(u)ux]x utt = F(ux) uxx utt = F(uxx) and uxt = F(u) are here classified. It is found that in addition to the well-known continuous one-parameter symmetry groups arising from infinitesimal Lie point transformations there also exist discrete symmetries forming cyclic groups of finite order. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
