dc.description.abstractThis paper describes some fundamental modelling principles that are necessary to assess the impact of HVDC pole-to-ground faults on a railway system. Particular emphasis is given on the appropriate modelling of the HVDC cables of a bipolar system that is operating under Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology. Moreover, due consideration is given on the appropriate modelling of the earthing configurations that are associated, both with the converters' stations and the HVDC electrodes. This is to ensure the correct distribution of the total fault current, thus accounting for the appropriate conductive and inductive couplings on the interfered railway system. This modelling task is part of the preliminary engineering studies that are carried out to assess the interference impact, which may be raised from the HVDC link between Attica and Crete, on critical and public infrastructures that are located in close proximity to the intended link's on-shore routing.en
