Dancers are a unique group of individuals who routinely engage in coordinated, highly-skilled performances with others in the immediate environment. Previous research suggests that, compared to non-dancers, dancers have superior cognitive and motor skills, such as memory, posture control, and balance. Although differences between dancers and non-dancers are reported for spatial skills, it is still unknown whether they are the result or the cause of dancing experience, insofar as individuals with superior skills may be more likely to take up dancing. To investigate the effects of dance experience on spatial awareness, we tracked individuals with no formal dance experience, who were about to attend dance lessons, and followed them for a year. We assessed the performance of these beginner dancers (N=29) in four different behavioral tasks and compared it to that of experienced dancers (N=40) and a control group of non-dancers (N=54) at two different time points: before the onset of dance lessons and twelve months later. In Experiment 1, participants carried out a spatial updating task presented in a virtual environment. In Experiment 2, they solved a paper and pencil judgment of relative direction task assessing spatial orientation. In Experiments 3 and 4, participants carried out a perspective transformation task and a mental body rotation task, respectively. Finally, by acquiring MRI scans at the two-time points, we aimed to determine whether evidence of training-induced gains could be found in the white matter microstructure of the brain. Overall, our results indicated that experienced dancers performed more accurately in the spatial updating and orientation tasks but not in the perspective-taking and mental body rotation tasks than beginner dancers. In addition, improved performance of the beginner dancers was observed compared to the control participants at T2 in all the tasks. Our neuroimaging data showed that the brain of experienced dancers differs from that of non-dancers in areas related to training in the specific domain, such as the corticospinal tract and the superior longitudinal fasciculus. Furthermore, the number of hours spent dancing was related to decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) in the left and right corticospinal tract of the beginner dancers. These results suggested that the unique combinations of motor and cognitive components characterizing dance can alter specific regions of white matter associated with the demands of practice even in adulthood. Future research should focus on determining the exact effects of dance training on spatial awareness skills and the white matter microstructure to inform the development of prevention and intervention dance programs.en
