Το Βασίλειο των Σόλων και η Βορειο-δυτική Κύπρος. Από την Ίδρυση της Αιπείας μέχρι το τέλος της Αρχαιότητας.

Abstract

Η διδακτορική διατριβή είχε ως στόχο της την καταγραφή της ιστορίας των Σόλων από την ίδρυση τους μέχρι και την καταστροφή της πόλης. Η συγγραφή της διατριβής βασίστηκε στα αποτελέσματα όλων των ανασκαφών που έγιναν στην ευρύτερη περιοχή των Σόλων, στα νομίσματα, στις αρχαίες γραπτές μαρτυρίες και στις επιγραφές που εντοπίστηκαν στην επικράτεια της πόλης και αλλού. Οι Σόλοι ήταν μια πόλη που ιδρύθηκε ως βασίλειο κατά τον 7ο αιώνα π.Χ. και για τουλάχιστον τρεις αιώνες διατηρήθηκε σε αυτή τη μορφή. Κατά τη διάρκεια της βασιλικής εποχής, η πόλη έζησε ένδοξες στιγμές, με τους βασιλείς της να συμμετέχουν στις πιο σημαντικές στιγμές της ιστορίας της Κύπρου. Κατά την περίοδο που ακολούθησε η πόλη διοικήθηκε από τον Οίκο των Πτολεμαίων της Αιγύπτου και στη συνέχεια από τους Ρωμαίους. Ωστόσο, παρά την απώλεια της αυτονομίας της πόλης, η ανάπτυξη συνεχίστηκε, όπως αποδεικνύεται από την κατασκευή σπουδαίων δημόσιων μνημείων όπως το Θεάτρο, το Νυμφαίο, τα πολυάριθμα ιερά και η Παλαιοχριστιανική Βασιλική. Η παρακμή της πόλης ξεκίνησε κατά τον 7ο αιώνα μ.Χ. λόγω των Αραβικών Επιδρομών και καταστροφικών σεισμών, αν και η πόλη εξακολούθησε να υφίσταται μέχρι και τον 12ο αιώνα μ.Χ., όταν και εγκαταλείφθηκε, με τους κάτοικους της να μετακινούνται προς τα νότια, στη σημερινή περιοχή της Σολέας.

The aim of the present doctoral thesis is the city of Soloi, from the Prehistoric period to the founding of the kingdom and from the royal period of the Archaic and Classical eras to its transformation into a city without a king but now as an important city in the Hellenistic and Roman eras. The chronological limits that have been set as a field of research are placed at the end of Late Antiquity, around the 7th AD. Century. At that time the city had now declined and the remnants of the once glorious city with its monumental buildings lay in the area, while much of the city's population moved south, to the rocky terrain of the northern slopes of the Troodos. The recording of the history of the city was based on the topography of northwestern Cyprus, on the literary testimonies to which the city refers, and its participation in various historical events. In addition, all the inscriptions and coins of the city were collected and used, as well as various medieval maps that record the location of the city and other important places within the territory of the city and the country of Soloi. The aim of the thesis is to present the excavations and their results, highlighting the movable and immovable archaeological finds from the city and the villages of Soloi through the centuries. Another aim of the thesis is the chronological separation of the prehistory and history of the city through the combination of findings and of written sources. The writing of the history and archeology of the city until today is fragmentary and micro-historical and there is no work that deals with the history of the city as a whole. Furthermore, there are a number of open historical issues whose interpretation has not been completely convincing and thus remain pending. Some of them are the time of the founding of the cities of Aipia and Soloi, the geographical location of the first and the identity of the palace in Vouni. The thesis aspires to give new impetus to research on one of the largest, most prosperous and important kingdoms of ancient Cyprus, through the gathering of evidence from ancient and modern writing. The capture and highlighting of information concerning the city is of minor importance as most of the excavations in the wider area took place many decades ago, without faithfully following the scientific methodology.
