Contemporary Realities of Iranian Prisons

Abstract

This dissertation investigates the widespread human rights violations in Iranian prisons and the underlying conditions that perpetuate these abuses. The research is guided by the central question: What are the widespread human rights violations in Iranian prisons, and what are the underlying conditions that perpetuate these violations? In the wake of the tragic death of Mahsa Amini and the subsequent nationwide protests, human rights issues in Iran's prisons have garnered international attention. The aftermath saw tens of thousands of arrests, highlighting the critical need for a thorough examination of the prison conditions. This study employs qualitative research methods, primarily through interviews with former political prisoners, to gain an in-depth understanding of the nature and extent of these violations. The findings reveal systematic abuses, including torture, denial of medical care, and psychological abuse, perpetuated by entrenched political and institutional practices within the Islamic Republic of Iran. The research aims to shed light on the dire human rights situation and advocate for necessary reforms to address these persistent issues.
