The title compound is the product of the photo-induced solid-state reaction of 2-(p-chloro)-benzyl-5-benzylidenecyclopentanone, a reaction which is shown to occur in a single-crystal to single-crystal fashion. The cell parameters of the dimer are very close to those of the monomer, with both structures belonging to the same space group. The final R was 0.044 for 1551 reflections with Fo>2σ(Fo). The compound has the molecular structure which is expected for the product of a topochemical reaction within the perfect monomer crystal. The packing of the dimer is compared with that of the monomer and found to be very similar. © 1984 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
