A study of a thermal wave hydrogen sensor characterized using transverse optical beam deflection measurements is presented, including a comparison of experimental data with a simple theoretical model. The sensor consists of a thin film polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film coated with a thin Pd layer. Changes in the thermal boundary conditions at the gas-film interface lead to sensitivity to hydrogen gas that depends upon the thermo-physical properties of the gas.
