Reviews the book, A Practical Guide to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy by Steven C. Hayes and Kirk D. Strosahl (see record 2005-02327-000). The reviewers state that this book is the first practical guide that highlights the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) approach for numerous disorders and presents it in detail. Specifically, the book is divided into three sections. The first section discusses the ACT approach, its core therapy processes, intervention strategies, the competencies required by an ACT therapist, and case formulation within ACT. This book becomes more interesting for the reader in the second section, in which ACT is described for behavioral problems. The authors have effectively summarized in the second section any research evidence supporting the ACT approach for each of the specified disorders to date. The third and final section of the book is a great asset; in this section, ACT with special populations, settings, and methods is presented. The reviewers consider this book to be an important addition to the literature on ACT because it makes ACT more approachable and less technical for practitioners.
