Proposes that cloze test scores be distinguished according to knowledge of text content, understanding of syntactic or argumentative links, reader's familiarity with the native language, and visual detection of similar sequences. It is maintained that these different aspects of processing, scored by a 2 x 2 matrix, allow differences in reading abilities and attitudes toward a text to be observed. The results of analysis of answers on 3 cloze tests provided by 11–14-yr-old students are discussed. (English & Dutch abstracts) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
