dc.description.abstract | The formation of new vessels in both primary tumour and in metastasis induce various growth factors included the vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF). The immunohistochemical expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in correlation with microvessel density (MVD) and other clinicopathological parameters was studied in breast carcinomas. This study was performed on a series of paraffin sections from 160 invasive breast cancer specimens by immunohistochemistry using the streptavidin-biotin method. The combination of extension and intensity of immunostaining was evaluated. VEGF expression was found in 151/160 (94.4%) of the cases. A statistically significant positive relationship between VEGF expression with grade of differentiation (p=0.003) and lymph node metastases (p=0.026) was found. In addition, high level of VEGF was correlated with negative estrogen receptor status (p=0.034). Patients with high VEGF expression showed a better response to treatment (p=0.04). No correlation between VEGF expression and MVD was found. These results showed that VEGF could be considered as poor prognostic factor in invasive breast carcinomas. In addition, its expression may be useful for clinical therapeutic application. | en |
