Using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we measure the superconducting gap and its momentum dependence in the high temperature superconductors Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8 (Bi2212) and YBa 2Cu 3O 6.95 (Y123). It is found that umklapp bands due to the incommensurate superlattice in Bi2212 may obscure the intrinsic momentum dependence of the gap. By taking these into consideration, we find a d- wave-like gap function in Bi2212. We also report an unambiguous observation of the superconducting gap in Y123.
