The response of a non-linear mechanical oscillator, depending on the type of non-linearity, to an excitation of particular harmonic might contain sub- and super-harmonics, transients and chaotic components. The conventional frequency response function, used to completely characterise the input-output behaviour of a linear mechanical oscillator, not only does not capture the above characteristics but also, in case of broadband excitation, fails to attribute them to individual frequencies. In this paper we apply the Choi-Williams time frequency distribution to simulated data of a single and three degree of freedom Duffing oscillator in order to assess its input-output relationship. © (2006) by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Department of Mechanical Engineering All rights reserved.

Multiscale amplitude-modulation frequency-modulation (AM-FM) texture analysis of ultrasound images of the intima and media layers of the carotid artery
Loizou, Christos P.; Murray, V.; Pattichis, Marios S.; Pantzaris, Marios C.; Pattichis, Constantinos S. (2011)The intima-media thickness (IMT) of the common carotid artery (CCA) is widely used as an early indicator of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Clinically, there is strong interest in identifying how the composition and texture ...

Adaptive mode-suppression and disturbance-rejection scheme with application to disk drives
Levin, J.; Ioannou, Petros A. (2009)The goal of a track-following controller for a disk drive is to maintain as close to perfect tracking as possible. Better tracking allows for more data to be stored on a single disk. There are several factors which make ...

Multirate adaptive notch filter with an adaptive bandwidth controller for disk drives
Levin, J.; Ioannou, Petros A. (2008)This paper presents the simulation results performed of a multirate adaptive notch filter with adaptive bandwidth controller for disk drives. The resonant modes of a disk drive may be uncertain and vary between units, and ...
