The exposure of seated people to whole body vibration has been extensively researched and modelled during the past two decades. The trend is to use the average biodynamic responses. This paper investigates the relation of apparent mass to the natural frequencies of the seated human body with the help of the ISO 5982 and a 2-dof model. The experimental biodynamic transfer functions and natural frequencies of 43 males were investigated. The results show that for each of the 3 modes that were identified between 0 and 30 Hz, a great amount of variance exists. A heuristic method utilizing differential evolution has been used to estimate the individual masses, stiffness values and damping factors of the subjects. The results show a wide scatter among the group with the corresponding statistics computed and presented. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.
