A discussion is presented of possible extensions to the SQL query language to make SQL suitable for use with object database systems intended for engineering applications. These extensions allow queries to be expressed over deeply nested and recursive object data structures. Both types of data structures occur frequently in engineering applications. In particular, an extended projection function and a transitive closure function are introduced. These functions are demonstrated on several typical CAD/CAM application data structures.en
