This chapter presents important information regarding the contribution of perovskite-type materials toward the development of new lean-burn NOx control catalytic technologies within the technical fields of hydrogen-selective catalytic reduction (H2)-SCR and diesel engine emissions control (NOx and soot). Perovskites can perform as lean-burn deNOx catalysts either solely or as hybrid systems (mixed with other solid phases) but even more efficiently in combination with noble metals. This explicit behavior is attributed to synergistic surface phenomena among the perovskite phase(s) and the noble metal. The design and development of novel catalytic systems with the following characteristics appear as important future challenges in the technical field of lean-burn deNOx: acceptable hydrogen consumption due to its combustion under lean-burn DeNOx conditions, lower ammonia slip than the present NH3-SCR and with deNOx conversions and N2-selectivities larger than 90%, and favorable economics against the present NH3-SCR (e.g., ratio of H2/NOx required). © 2016 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
