The oxidation state of Rh after various CO/He treatments with a 2.5 wt% Rh/MgO catalyst was investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The rhodium metal particles, initially in a reduced state (Rh0), were found to be partially oxidized (Rhn+) after treatment with CO/He at T < 523 K followed by heating in He to 723 K. The formation of Rhn+ species depends on H2 reduction conditions applied before the exposure of the catalyst to CO/He. The amount of Rhn+ species formed decreases with increasing H2 reduction temperature. © 1993 Academic Press, Inc.en
