Marine sediment samples were collected from Ierissos Gulf, N Aegean Sea, close to the coastal mining facilities. Measurements of radionuclide and metal concentrations, mineral composition and grain size distribution were performed. The concentrations of 226Ra, 235U and trace metals showed enhanced values in the port of Stratoni compared with those obtained near to Ierissos port. The dose rates received by marine biota were also calculated by the ERICA Assessment Tool and the results indicated no significant radiological risk. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Effect of turbulent pulsating flow around a near-wall submerged cylinder on the potential motion of bed and suspended loads
Fonias, E. N.; Grigoriadis, D. G. E. (International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers, 2016)In the present work, the pulsating flow around a submerged cylinder close to the impermeable seabed is examined by means of Large Eddy Simulations (LES). A Reynolds number equal to Re = 5000 is considered, based on the ...

Large eddy simulation of sediment transport for the pulsating flow past a cylinder over a horizontal bed
Fonias, E. N.; Grigoriadis, D. G. E. (International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers, 2015)In the present work, the suspended, pulsating incompressible flow past a submerged cylinder was examined by means of Large Eddy Simulations (LES). A layer of sandy inertial particles was allowed to move between the cylinder ...

Adsorption of trivalent lanthanides by marine sediments
Liatsou, Ioanna; Efstathiou, Maria; Pashalidis, Ioannis (2015)The interaction of Eu(III) with two different types of marine sediments has been investigated as a function of various parameters (e.g. pH, [Eu(III)]o, I, humic acid) to evaluate their effect on the Eu(III) adsorption. The ...
