It was established that TEM could be employed to provide complementary data on the nature of the pores formed, in particular, their size, shape and distribution within the fibre cross-section. It was found that the borate and phosphate treatments produced very different pore size distributions. The authors report on an investigation of staining techniques to provide visual enhancement of the micrographs in order to obtain clearer information as to the nature of pore development. The two stains used were aqueous solutions of potassium iodide and uranyl acetate.
