Η ρητορική διάσταση των παραμυθητικών λόγων του Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Abstract

Η παρούσα διατριβή στοχεύει στην ανάδειξη της ρητορικής διάστασης των παραμυθητικών λόγων του Lucius Annaeus Seneca. Εξετάζεται πώς ο ίδιος ο φιλόσοφος ακολουθεί τη δομή ενός ρητορικού λόγου προσαρμόζοντας τα χαρακτηριστικά του στον παραμυθητικό του λόγο. Αναλύονται κατά μέρος, ως προς τη ρητορικότητά τους, οι τρεις παραμυθητικοί λόγοι του Σενέκα De Consolatione ad Marciam, De Consolatione ad Polybium και De Consolatione ad Helviam Matrem. Κάθε μέρος του λόγου, προοίμιο (exordium), απόδειξη (argumentatio) και επίλογος (peroratio), χωρίζεται σε υποενότητες που στόχο έχουν να καταδείξουν την επιμέλεια του παραμυθητικού λόγου ως προς τις τεχνικές, τα μοτίβα και τα επιχειρήματα. Αυτά, όπως αποδεικνύεται, κατά βάση πηγάζουν από τη ρητορική, ενώ σε κάθε παραμυθητικό λόγο παρατηρείται ένα πλήθος ρητορικών, φιλοσοφικών, ιατρικών, δικανικών και λογοτεχνικών όρων, εννοιών και κρίσεων που τοποθετούνται συνετά και οργανωμένα στον λόγο. Με αυτό τον τρόπο ανιχνεύεται η ιδιαιτερότητα της δομής του εκάστοτε λόγου, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στις απώτερες στοχεύσεις του Σενέκα σε κάθε μέρος του παραμυθητικού του λόγου σύμφωνα με τα χαρακτηριστικά που προϋποθέτει το μέρος αυτό, ώστε να διαφανεί η ρητορική επίδραση στη σύνθεση του Σενέκα. Συμπεραίνεται ότι στο προοίμιο η απώτερη στόχευση του Σενέκα είναι η ευνοϊκή διάθεση του αποδέκτητου, στην απόδειξη είναι η επίκληση στη λογική του αποδέκτη, και στον επίλογο είναι η επίκληση στο συναίσθημα οίκτου του αποδέκτη. Γενικότερα αποδεικνύεται ότι ο παραμυθητικός λόγος είναι ένας φιλοσοφικός λόγος με ρητορικές στοχεύσεις. Ως προς τη ρητορικότητα των υπό εξέταση παραμυθητικών λόγων οδηγηθήκαμε στο συμπέρασμα ότι ο παραμυθητικός λόγος με την περισσότερη ρητορικότητα είναι ο παραμυθητικός λόγος προς τη Μαρκία τόσο στη δομή όσο και στην ποικίλη χρήση επιχειρημάτων και λεξιλογίου. Ο παραμυθητικός λόγος προς τον Πολύβιο εκτιμάται ότι είναι επίσης έντονα ρητορικός, με λιγότερα επιχειρήματα όμως, στοχευμένος στο να προκαλέσει τον οίκτο και για τον Σενέκα, ο οποίος βρισκόταν στην εξορία. Εν τέλει, ο παραμυθητικός λόγος προς την Ελβία συνδυάζει τα ρητορικά στοιχεία με τον φιλοσοφικό λόγο, ο οποίος όμως εδώ είναι εντονότερος. Είναι έμμεσα προσωποκεντρικός προς τον ίδιο το Σενέκα, ώστε να προκληθεί και πάλι ο οίκτος προς αυτόν, ο οποίος βρισκόταν στην εξορία. Ως επιστέγασμα της ιδιαίτερης αυτής ανάλυσης των παραμυθητικών λόγων του Σενέκα επισημαίνεται η σημαντική συμβολή του στην παραμυθητική παράδοση με τη θεμελίωση ρητορικών τεχνικών και επιχειρημάτων σύμφωνα με τη ρητορική, πολιτική, φιλοσοφική και παιδαγωγική του φυσιογνωμία.

This dissertation aims to expose the rhetorical aspect of the consolatory speeches of Lucius Annaeus Seneca. It examines how the philosopher himself embraces the structure of a rhetorical speech and how he adjusts its characteristics to his consolatory speech. The three consolatory speeches of Seneca De Consolatione ad Marciam, De Consolatione ad Polybium and De Consolatione ad Helviam Matrem are analysed in sections. Each section of the speech, introduction (exordium), argumentation (argumentatio), conclusion (peroratio), is divided in subsections which aim to prove the literary diligence that is evident in the consolatory speech as regards its techniques, its patterns and its arguments. These are proved to be originated basically from the rhetoric but their content is a synthesis of rhetorical, philosophical, medical, legal and literal terms, concepts and thoughts that are used sensibly and organised adroitly through the speech. Thus, the specificity of the structure of each speech is detected, with special emphasis to the objectives of Seneca in each section of his consolatory speech according to the characteristics that are required for that section, in order to be revealed the rhetorical influence in Seneca’s consolations. The conclusion is that at the introduction the main objective of Seneca is the captatio benevolentiae of the addressee, in the argumentation is the invocation to the logic of the addressee, in the conclusion is the invocation to the emotion of compassion of the addressee. In general, it is concluded that the consolatory speech is a philosophical speech with rhetorical intentions. As regards the rhetorical influence on the examined consolatory speeches, we conclude that the consolatory speech which has more rhetorical elements is the Consolation to Marcia due both to its structure and to its variability of arguments and vocabulary. We demonstrate that the consolatory speech to Polybius has also intensive rhetorical elements, even though it provides fewer arguments, and it is aimed to cause the pity for Seneca who was in exile. Finally, the consolatory speech to Helvia combines the rhetorical elements with the philosophical discourse, which here is more intense. It is indirectly focused to Seneca himself in order to cause the pity for him. As a capstone of this special analysis of the consolatory speeches of Seneca, his significant contribution to the consolatory genre is demonstrated by investigating his institution of rhetorical techniques and arguments in his consolatory speeches according to his rhetorical, political, philosophical, and educational physiognomy.
