Η πρόσληψη του γενέθλιου τόπου στη νεοελληνική λογοτεχνία της Κύπρου του 20ού αιώνα

Abstract

Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή έχει ως θέμα την πρόσληψη του γενέθλιου τόπου στη λογοτεχνική παραγωγή της Κύπρου του 20ού αιώνα, ποιητική και πεζογραφική, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα μείζονα εθνικά και κοινωνικά ζητήματα που απασχόλησαν την Κύπρο κατά τον 20ό αιώνα: βρετανική αποικιοκρατία, ενωτικός-αντιαποικιοκρατικός αγώνας, περίοδος της Ανεξαρτησίας, τουρκική εισβολή. Το χρονολογικό όριο της πραγμάτευσης είναι η ένταξη της Κύπρου στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (2004), που δημιουργεί νέες ιστορικές συνθήκες για τον τόπο. Η διατριβή διαρθρώνεται σε 5 μέρη: Εισαγωγή, τρία Κεφάλαια, Συμπεράσματα, και συνοδεύεται από εκτενή διεθνή και ελληνόγλωσση Βιβλιογραφία. Στην Εισαγωγή δίνεται το θεωρητικό και μεθοδολογικό πλαίσιο, καθώς και τα ερευνητικά ερωτήματα στα οποία επιχειρεί να απαντήσει η διατριβή. Το πρώτο Κεφάλαιο («Ο γενέθλιος τόπος στη λογοτεχνία της Κύπρου του 20ού αιώνα») εξετάζει το θέμα σε μια ιστορικογραμματολογική προοπτική, σχολιάζοντας αντιπροσωπευτικά λογοτεχνικά κείμενα Κυπρίων ποιητών και πεζογράφων, ώστε να φανεί πώς υφαίνεται εξελικτικά ο λογοτεχνικός μύθος της πόλης και του γενέθλιου τόπου. Στο δεύτερο Κεφάλαιο («Τόπος και Ιστορία») η έμφαση πέφτει στη σχέση του γενέθλιου τόπου με την ιστορία: εξετάζονται οι τρόποι χειρισμού της ιστορικής ύλης και πιο ειδικά η αντίληψη του ενιαίου χωροχρόνου που χαρακτηρίζει τη νεοελληνική λογοτεχνία της Κύπρου. Στο τρίτο Κεφάλαιο («Ο τόπος ως υπαρξιακό βίωμα») εξετάζονται οι πολλαπλές όψεις-εικόνες του γενέθλιου τόπου στα έργα των Ελληνοκύπριων δημιουργών: το σπίτι ως πατρίδα, πατρίδα-μάνα, πατρίδα-ερωμένη, πατρίδα-παιδί, πατρίδα-όνειρο. Επιπλέον η πραγμάτευση εστιάζει σε μερικές ειδικές περιπτώσεις που δείχνουν πώς η πραγματική πόλη (η Αμμόχωστος, η Κερύνεια) μετασχηματίζεται σε λογοτεχνικό μύθο στο έργο σημαντικών Κυπρίων δημιουργών (Γ.Φ. Πιερίδης, Κ. Χαραλαμπίδης, Κ. Μόντης, Ν. Κρανιδιώτης, Κ. Χρυσάνθης, κ.ά.). Στα Συμπεράσματα παρουσιάζονται τα βασικά πορίσματα της διατριβής που αφορούν στα ερευνητικά ερωτήματα που τέθηκαν στην Εισαγωγή. Δίνονται επίσης ορισμένες κατευθύνσεις περαιτέρω έρευνας σε ό,τι αφορά την εξέταση της ποιητικής της πόλης στην ευρύτερη νεοελληνική λογοτεχνία, συγκριτικά προς τη νεοελληνική λογοτεχνία της Κύπρου. Η συμβολή της διατριβής έγκειται στην ανάδειξη της πολλαπλής νοηματοδότησης του γενέθλιου τόπου μέσα από ένα σύνολο παραμέτρων, όπως η διαφοροποίηση άστυ / ύπαιθρος, η επένδυση αξιών στον χώρο, η ονειρική ή οραματική αναπαράσταση των τοπωνυμίων στην αφήγηση, η ενεργή συμμετοχή του γενέθλιου τόπου στην πλοκή ως δρώσα μνήμη, η παρεμβολή της Ιστορίας, ο διάλογος με τη λαϊκή παράδοση και η χρήση του τοπικού γλωσσικού ιδιώματος.

The subject of this dissertation thesis is the perception of the birthplace in the modern Cypriot literature (poetry and prose), in relation with the most important historical, national and social issues faced by the Cypriots during the 20th century: the British colonialism, the anti-colonial struggle, the period of independence, the Turkish invasion. The chronological limits of the research are expanded from the period of the British rule (1878) until the accession of Cyprus to the European Union (2004), a fact that creates new historical conditions for the island. The PhD thesis is composed of five parts: Introduction, three Chapters, and Conclusions, and ends with an extensive Bibliography in Greek and, especially, in foreign languages. The Introduction provides the theoretical and methodological framework, as well as the research questions, which the dissertation attempts to answer. The first chapter, entitled “The birthplace in the Cypriot literature of the 20th century”, examines the subject in a historical perspective, commenting on representative literary texts of Cypriot poets and prose writers in order to reveal how the literary myth of the birthplace evolves. In the second chapter, entitled “Place and History”, the emphasis falls on the relationship between place and history. More specifically, the study concerns the modes of employing the historical material in the oeuvre of significant Cypriot writers, especially poets. The emphasis is placed on the perception of time and memory in their work and, more importantly, on the undivided space-time construct, which characterizes the Modern Greek literature of Cyprus. The third chapter, entitled “The place as an existential experience”, examines the multiple aspects and images of the birthplace in the literary works of the Greek-Cypriot writers, i.e. the home as homeland, the homeland as a mother, the homeland as a mistress, the homeland as a child, and finally, the homeland as a dream (or a vision). Moreover, the research focuses on some indicative cases of “mythical” cities, which demonstrate how the real city (Famagusta, Kyrenia) is transformed into a literary myth in the works of the most prominent Greek-Cypriot poets and prose writers, such as Giorgos Philippou Pierides, Kyriakos Charalambides, Kostas Montis, Nikos Kranidiotes, Kypros Chrysanthes, and others. The Conclusions summarise the main findings of the dissertation about the research questions posed in the Introduction. Some directions are also given for further research in terms of examining the subject in the broader framework of Modern Greek literature and in relation with the Modern Greek literature of Cyprus, i.e. in a comparative perspective. The contribution of the PhD thesis in Modern Greek Studies, and especially in the field of Greek-Cypriot literature, lies in the following: the importance and the multiple connotations of the birthplace in literature through a set of parameters, such as the diversification “city / countryside”, the moral and historical values posed to the place (and especially the birthplace), the representation of toponyms in the narrative, the birthplace as an important agent of the plot, the interference of place and history, the dialogue of the Cypriot writers with the folk tradition and the employment of the dialectical language in their oeuvre, the perception of the (lost) birthplace as a dream (or a nightmare), and finally, the vision of the birthplace as a vivid memory, which preserves nostos, i.e. the hope of return after the traumatic experience of the Turkish invasion.
