Mental maps of Eleftherias Square in Nicosia, and the Socio-Spatial Representations

Abstract

Public squares are an essential element within a city that act as a social space where people have the opportunity to be socially engaged with each other. Within the spatial form of a square a number of dynamics can be developed from different social groups and produce activities to co-create the space. Public square becomes a reflection of the society where a number of socio-spatial representations are reflected through its spatial identity. The thesis is about the socio-spatial representations of the new Eleftherias square which is located between the old and new city of Nicosia. The thesis is based on a small-scale qualitative study using mental maps as a tool to understand mental images of the participants around the Eleftherias square. Following the drawing process a discussion took place based on the elements drawn to further analyze the elements drawn on the map. The aim of the thesis is to find the socio-spatial representations and mental images of Eleftherias square and understand if through these representations cultural values are reflected. Therefore, through the research we could suggest terms of usability that the square fails based on the cultural needs of Cypriots and the usability is influenced based on economic status, xenophobia, prejudice and consumerism.
