The calculation of pile settlements and the analysis of soil-structure interaction for structures founded on piles are based on the use of vertical soil reaction models, such as t-z models, for both the pile tip and the pile shaft. These models, in their most common form, consist of linear elastic springs and sliders connected in series, with their parameters determined during the preliminary design phase based on soil properties. This thesis investigates the reliability of state-of-the-art t-z models by comparing their predictions with the results of pile load tests, with the aim of proposing ways to improve these models. For this purpose, data were collected and analyzed from pile load tests conducted within the framework of bridge construction projects at various locations in Greece, reflecting different local geotechnical conditions. Additionally, the data from the corresponding field investigation geotechnical reports were processed to extract soil parameters such as unit ultimate resistances and the modulus of elasticity.
Through comparative analysis, the effectiveness of the models is evaluated against the actual load test data, and the potential causes of discrepancies are identified. Subsequently, the thesis proposes modifications to the computational framework that enhance the accuracy of the predictions. The analysis reveals that the stiffness of the springs needs to be significantly higher in Pleistocene and older geological materials than what is predicted by existing empirical correlations for recent soils.
