Some Methodological Issues Arising Out of Tuncer Bagiskan's Ottoman, Islamic and Islamised Monuments in Cyprus

Abstract

This short article takes the form of a series of observations on Tuncer Bagiskan's book, the English translation of which was published as above. These observations, thematically diverse, are made in connection with general points of scholarly methodology. The article will partake also of the spirit and form of a review. My observations spring from the very close acquaintance with a text which a translator gradually acquires. The observations in question are grouped under three headings: questions of arrangement, where we examine the advantages and disadvantages of the arrangement of material in the book

art-historical questions, which concern particularly the rightness and wrongness of assigning monuments to given origins on the basis of particular features

and issues arising out of the inscriptions on monuments. The latter issues concern, first, the technique of translating into English Ottoman monumental inscriptions, and, secondly, the historiographical use that can be made of a series of inscriptions which fall into the period of the Greek War of Independence (1821-29).
