The production and decay kinetics of CIOO in water and freon-11: A time-resolved resonance Raman study

The production and decay kinetics of ClOO in water and freon-11 were studied using time-resolved resonance Raman (TRRR) spectroscopy. The formation of ClOO following OClO photoexcitation at 390 nm was investigated using resonance Raman spectra obtained with a 260 nm probe beam. Aqueous ClOO appeared and decayed with time constants of 27.9±4.5 ps and 398±50 ps. The ClOO kinetics was found to be much slower in freon-11. The germinate recombination quantum yield for ClOO production was reduced in freon-11 relative to water. Photoisomerization of OClO followed by excited state internal conversion was also proposed for formation of ground state ClOO.
