The development of wavelength filters, such as Bragg and superstructure gratings in glass and polymer optical fibers, using a femtosecond laser is reported. By using a femtosecond laser operating in the green, which offers greater inscription efficiency, we demonstrate the reliable inscription of Bragg and superstructure gratings in coated silica and low-loss CYTOP polymer optical fibers. We employ line by line and point by point inscription methods, allowing for multiple and overlapping gratings in the fiber core. Moreover, we demonstrate a novel fibre Bragg grating inscription technique to modify and add versatility to an existing, encapsulated optical fiber pressure sensor. © 2015 SPIE.

Narrow linewidth excimer laser for inscribing Bragg gratings in optical fibers
Othonos, Andreas S.; Lee, X. (1995)A spectrally narrow linewidth KrF excimer laser has been developed for the application of writing Bragg gratings in optical fibers. Two air spaced etalons 80 and 6 cm-1 have been incorporated within the laser cavity resulting ...

A Multiplexed Bragg Grating Fiber Laser Sensor System
Alavie, A. Tino; Karr, S. E.; Measures, R. M.; Othonos, Andreas S. (1993)A technique for multiplexing Bragg gratings in a fiber laser arrangement is described. This technique has successfully been used to multiplex two and three Bragg gratings with very little crosstalk. The Bragg grating laser ...

Characteristics of fiber grating sensors and their relation to manufacturing techniques
Alavie, A. Tino; Maaskant, Robert; Stubbe, Raoul; Othonos, Andreas S.; Ohn, Myo M.; Sahlgren, Bengt; Measures, Raymond M. (Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, 1995)This work examines the effects of different manufacturing techniques of fiber optic intracore Bragg gratings on their sensing and system parameters. Specifically, we have looked at tolerance with respect to center wavelength, ...
