A large proportion of the country's building stock had been constructed without the provisions of an anti-seismic regulation; thus, the necessity to assess the load bearing capacity of existing structures is nowadays perceived as mandatory. The selection of the appropriate analysis method for the assessment of existing structures and the reliability of the results have special importance, as they determine the demands in terms of strengthening and ductility, as well as the magnitude of damage which is possible to develop in a future seismic event. Furthermore, a crucial element is the correct comprehension of the structural system, the correct determination of the modelling parameters and the simulation of the structure. This thesis examines the southeast part of the historical building of Nicosia’s Municipality Market. The Municipality Market was built in 1964 and it is a significant monument of modernism with crucial socio-economical influence in the walled city. The current state of the structure, after thorough visual inspection and testing of the materials, is deemed as poor, because of the lack of maintenance and malpractice in the stage of construction. The aim of this thesis is to compare the results of two types of assessment analysis procedures performed on the structure, the static pushover and nonlinear time history analyses, in order to better understand the applicability limits, the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The two aforementioned methods of analysis are examined with regards to their ability to appropriately assess the performance of the structural members of an existing asymmetric structure.en
