The present research entitled The myth of Helen in European literature of the 20th century: Jean Giraudoux, Giorgos Seferis, Gabriele D΄Annunzio, attempts a parallel examination of three specific literary texts in different languages with a link between the presence and the role of the mythical Helen in them: La guerre de Troie n΄aura pas lieu (engl. transl. Tiger at the Gates) by Jean Giraudoux, the poem «Eleni» by Giorgos Seferis and the poem « La Dramma » («The drachma»), which is included in his epic work Maia, Laus Vitae by Gabriele D΄Annunzio. The three authors of these works –politicians and diplomats, as well with rich biographies and action– have lived at the heart of the political events in the 20th century, a fact that is reflected in their work. Expressing their ideas and beliefs in three national languages with common origins and moving around the Mediterranean sea, they are three typical examples of the endless dialogue of european intellect and art with ancient Greek culture. The intertextual use of the myth of Helen –a seductive and magic figure, inexhaustible in transformations– reveals the dialectical character of european culture derivative from and behind which lies the democratic and liberal spirit of ancient Greek culture, which in its attempt to balance the forces of opposition and to unite the opposites projected moderation and harmony as ideal elements.
Regarding the use of the examined myth, in the specific space time, it falls into the general scheme that at the beginning of the 20th century the myth comes again to the center of interest. The reception of the myth of Helen reflects the willingness of the spiritual people of two world wars to restore the mythical symbols as an inexhaustible source of inspiration and insurmountable values or otherwise to deconstruct them in the context of modernism and modernity with the aim of satirizing or sarcastically commenting on the futility of human things, but also as a reference point for the emptiness of meanings in contemporaneous modern time. In the wider european context, a myth constitutes intertext, which is fed back and enriched with each new presence in the literary context.
