Resilience of Synoikismos Strovolou III

Abstract

Synoikismoi emerged a year after the 1974 Turkish invasion under the “Displaced Housing in Government Settlements” program. Based on the historical and urban worth of Synoikismoi, along with the prevailing spatial and social conditions, the current research focuses on Spatial and Social Resilience. The proposal was developed on three scales: urban, settlement, and building scales. On the urban scale, integration into the wider city network is crucial to achieve better incorporation into the city. Maintaining apartment buildings, creating communal spaces, and activating public spaces are key strategies followed at the settlement scale. Even though the current research proposal concentrates on a specific settlement, Synoikismos Strovolou III the proposal can be implemented with minor modifications in all settlements around Cyprus.
