Noninvasive ultrasound imaging of carotid plaques allows for the development of plaque-image analysis methods associated with the risk of stroke. This paper presents several plaque-image analysis methods that have been developed over the past years. The paper begins with a review of clinical methods for visual classification that have led to standardized methods for image acquisition, describes methods for image segmentation and denoizing, and provides an overview of the several texture-feature extraction and classification methods that have been applied. We provide a summary of emerging trends in 3-D imaging methods and plaque-motion analysis. Finally, we provide a discussion of the emerging trends and future directions in our concluding remarks. © 2006 IEEE.

M.; Nicolaïdes, Andrew N.; Kyriacou, Efthyvoulos C.; Pattichis, Constantinos S.; Geroulakos, George; Thomas, Dominique (2007)Objectives: The aim of our study was to determine the association between objective, computerised texture analysis of carotid plaque ultrasonic images and embolic CT-brain infarction in patients presenting with hemispheric ...
Evaluation of the risk of stroke with confidence predictions based on ultrasound carotid image analysis Lambrou, Alexandra; Papadopoulos, Harris; Kyriacou, Efthyvoulos C.; Pattichis, Constantinos S.; Pattichis, Marios S.; Gammerman, A.; Nicolaïdes, Andrew N. (2012)Conformal Predictors (CPs) are Machine Learning algorithms that can provide reliable confidence measures to their predictions. In this work, we make use of the Conformal Prediction framework for the assessment of stroke ...
Quality evaluation of ultrasound imaging in the carotid artery based on normalization and speckle reduction filtering Loizou, Christos P.; Pattichis, Constantinos S.; Pantzaris, Marios C.; Tyllis, Theodosis K.; Nicolaïdes, Andrew N. (2006)Image quality is important when evaluating ultrasound images of the carotid for the assessment of the degree of atherosclerotic disease, or when transferring images through a telemedicine channel, and/or in other image ...
