| el |
dc.description.abstract | The present doctoral thesis, “Scraping off Melancholy: Queer Palimpsests in Modern Greek Literature”, employs the theory of gender melancholy, as developed by Judith Butler and further explored by Julia Kristeva, Jacques Derrida, Jack Halberstam and Luce Irigaray, as an axis of reference. The theoretical approaches of these theorists to gender melancholy, embodiment and subjectivity are explored by analysing relationships of harmony and tension amongst them as well as by developing parallel readings between theoretical and literary texts. The literary texts selected from the corpus of Modern Greek literature are read against the grain of the heteronormative premise, bringing forth the subject’s dysphoria and opening up potentialities for a different, alternative understanding of Modern Greek literature. This queering approach to and reading of Modern Greek literature undoes the suppression perpetrated by the dominant discourse of the literary canon and gives prominence to the dysphoria of the subject and the dynamics of the relegated abject discourse as a palimpsest which constantly (un)veils the fluidity and mutability that characterize it.
The sympleusis of theory and literature, mediated with the parallel reading of a theorist and a literary Modern Greek text in each case, is employed as a methodology of immanent critique. The term sympleusis is used to suggest a course of parallel navigation, with interpretation mediated on board different vessels. Sympleusis points to a parallel theoretical enveloping of the selected literary text and a literary enveloping of each theory, thus enabling vitality and doubling of hermeneutic directionality. The theoretical and literary, materialist and imaginary joints and events effected through this sympleusis shed light on the melancholic, the silenced, the obscured and the marginalized while at the same time challenging the metaphysics of presence and disrupting the logic of noncontradiction (one truth, one meaning, one history and, ultimately, a recuperation of the dominant, patriarchal discourse).
Reworking theory and literary analysis around the axes of melancholy and dysphoria, the thesis proposes and vindicates the release of literary texts from the repressive and suffocating discursive frameworks of patriarchy and homonationalism over the literary canon. Scraping off the subject’s melancholy displaces the cloak that concealed their dysphoria: here is the cloak; here is the amputated limp and the body; here is its litany and its enunciation. This thesis enables the performative re-turn of the abject in discourse through a double procession and processing of the amputated body and its discarded limp(s). Gender’s remain is reclaimed as a perpetually deceased yet spectral body which has not been duly honoured. Its litany in theory and literature revives another pending due; namely, the enunciation of the silenced abject discourse and its multifaceted potentialities which can no longer be stifled and, thus, lay claim to vitality. | en |
