| el |
dc.description.abstract | This thesis explores how primary school teachers are constituted as professional subjects through narrations of their whole personal and professional lives and especially when they narrate their experiences of participation in the Erasmus European Program. Examining how these experiences were involved in the personal and professional paths that the teachers narrated when recounting their lives, an attempt was made to trace their constitution as subjects with/through discourses and discursive practices produced in a variety of contexts, personal, local (school and institutional) and broader (European and socio-political). At the same time, it was traced in their narratives how they enact this particular policy by recontextualizing it locally in their daily life. The research is grounded in the Foucauldian view of subjectification, whereby the constitution of teachers as subjects is a dynamic, unstable, and constantly 'produced' process, deeply interweaved in the wider forces of power/knowledge and discourse, which, in this study, are materialised in the Erasmus Program as a case of European education policy. In order to investigate in depth and in the context of their wider lives such an interconnection, the biographical method in general and teacher life history research in particular were used. The main data collection was conducted through two long, biographical interviews with eight e teachers working in public primary schools in the Republic of Cyprus. This data was framed by artefacts teachers were asked to bring and which related to experiences from their childhood-student years and to their Erasmus participations; by historical timelines which teachers filled in with pivotal points from their life course; as well as by the relevant field notes and reflective diary I kept as a researcher. For the purposes of analyzing and interpreting all data, 'discourse analysis', 'thematic analysis' and 'content analysis’ methods were combined. The coding and analysis of the data led to the development of individual biographical texts for each of the eight teachers, in order to highlight recurring themes within each life history, as well as across all life histories in the meta-analysis that followed.
The investigation of the topic through the teachers’ life histories highlighted, among other things, discourses through and amidst which they are constituted as ideal ‘erasmian’ subjects, i.e. as specific type of professionals who participate in Erasmus with a positive interconnection of their professional and personal lives. Teachers overall emerged through and in their narratives as subjects that are constantly constituted through events, experiences, incidents, situations, and persons they encountered during their life course, personal and professional, within fluid local and wider contexts that emanate from a specific space and time. This life course was narrated in the study so that their constitution could be traced from their childhood-student years; during their studies as teachers; at their induction and practice of the profession and, finally, at their Erasmus participations when these occurred, which were enacted from a certain point in their career onwards. It is argued that the ‘erasmian subject’ is constituted as one seeking to constantly develop professionally and personally; as experiencing their personal and professional life positively and mutually enriching; as exercising extended (towards children and colleagues), administrative and transnational professionalism · as claiming a certain type of autonomy for curriculum-making with, mainly, interdisciplinary, digital-technological and intercultural content; and as a "resilient" subject who, despite constraining conditions at any given time, persists and s steadily participates in the Program by locating or creating enabling conditions. At the same time, this ‘erasmian subject’ flexibly recontextualised the Program, even when it is narrated as incompatible with specific conditions of the local-personal, local-school, and local-institutional context. In conclusion, it is argued that the constitution of teachers as ‘erasmian subjects’ was traceable throughout their life course through specific discourses of recognisability and exceptionalism, while it is always ongoing and impossible to be complete, since conditions are fluid and teachers are constantly reconstituted. | en |
